In this video I go through the basics of anchoring a small boat: choosing an anchor, setting up the anchor rode, and how letting out more scope changes how well the anchor holds.

Making a running line

Open ›
Keep your boat anchored in deeper water off a shallow or tidal shore and pull it in without wading. I show the anchor and stainless ring setup, splicing the rope and rigging it ashore.

When an anchor gets stuck

Open ›
A chain can wrap around a rock as the tide turns, trapping the anchor even when nothing was done wrong. I show how, then search for a lost anchor with side-scan sonar and SCUBA.

Installing an anchor winch

Open ›
Mounting an anchor winch so it clears nearby deck fittings. I fit a Lewmar V1 through a yacht's deck above the anchor well, then a Savwinch drum winch and self-launching bow roller to Renko.

Wiring an anchor winch

Open ›
An electric anchor winch reverses polarity to go up or down, through a 70 amp circuit breaker, control solenoid and switch. I run the cables forward and fix a winch that only runs one way.
