Fuel lines carry fuel from the tank to the outboard, the primer bulb pumps it up by hand before starting, and a filter catches dirt and water before it gets to the engine. Old fuel lines break up inside and block the flow, and a clear filter bowl is the best way to see it happening.

Installing a water separating fuel filter
Open ›Outboards have a small internal fuel filter, so an external water separating filter with a clear bowl keeps dirt and water out. I mount one without drilling the hull, seal the fittings and prime the system.
The fuel lines have perished inside
Open ›Engine starts fine but starves of fuel and stalls at full throttle, with fragments showing in the clear fuel filter. I show how to spot perished line, cut new hose square and clamp it properly.
The fuel primer bulb
Open ›The primer bulb pumps fuel from the tank to the fuel pump, which can't pump air. I cut one open to show its one-way ball valves and why holding it arrow up helps it prime.
