When I rewired my runabout, the Green Machine, I took out all the old wiring and started again from the battery. In the first video I run a fused cable from the battery in the stern to a pair of bus bars under the dash. Every device is then wired to the terminal blocks there, which keeps the wiring neat and the cables as short as possible.
In the second part I add a stern light, put the battery in a battery box strapped to the deck, spray the terminals to stop corrosion, and run all the wires in conduit cable-tied to the steering cable.
Installing dual batteries on a boat
Open ›A flat battery from the lights or fish finder needn't stop you starting the outboard. I wire in a second battery and battery switch, make up heavy leads, and test cranking on each battery and both.
Installing and calibrating an outboard tachometer
Open ›A tacho helps you choose the right prop and spot cavitation. I wire one to the charge coil, check it with a multimeter on hertz and fix a reading that's double by changing the pole setting.
Adding a starter motor to a pull-start outboard
Open ›Electric start can be added to a pull-start outboard. I wire in a starter relay, use a multimeter to find the key switch's crank wire, and connect the battery leads.
